The Al Shira'aa Hickstead Derby Meeting

21 – 24 June 2018

The Al Shira'aa Derby is one of the most famous showjumping classes in the world, an iconic event, one that makes heroes of its human and equine stars. The course itself is as famous as the horses and riders that embark upon it, barely changing in the five decades since the class was first born. No other event in the world asks this much of its entrants, and no other course creates this type of drama.

The All England Jumping Course was founded in 1960 by the late Douglas Bunn, who wanted to create a showground to rival those on the continent. A year later, his new showground played host to the very first Hickstead Derby.

Since then, many of showjumping's biggest names have won the class, including Nick Skelton, Michael Whitaker, John Whitaker, Harvey Smith and Ben Maher. Eddie Macken holds the record with four consecutive wins, and since then the Boomerang Trophy - named after Eddie's great horse - goes to the Derby winner.

It is the only class in which riders take on the front descent of the 10ft 6in Hickstead Derby Bank. But every fence in the course is difficult, especially the Devil's Dyke, the double of water ditches, and one of the widest water jumps in the world.

The June meeting concludes on Sunday afternoon with the showcase Al Shira'aa Derby, but the fixture also hosts a full range of senior national showjumping classes, with something for nearly every calibre of affiliated rider.

The first international class is the Stoner Jewellers' Vase, held on Thursday morning, and that afternoon you can see some of the Derby hopefuls get their preparations underway in the Bunn Leisure Derby Tankard.

Those hoping to qualify for the Al Shira'aa Derby have to qualify during Friday's Bunn Leisure Derby Trial - a great place to check out the current form of some of the contenders - while Saturday afternoon plays host to the British Speed Derby, where riders tackle some of our permanent fences at top speed.

The Al Shira'aa Hickstead Derby Meeting is best known for its international showjumping classes, but there is plenty more on offer for equestrian fans. There are dozens of showing classes, including the prestigious final of the Tattersalls/RoR Thoroughbred Show Series Championship, plus there's scurry driving and more. Saturday evening is party night, when everyone is invited to stay on at the showground for the entertaining Celebrity Polo Match.

Our famous Mini Challenge too must not be overlooked; as the starting point of many of today's leading riders, it is the place to discover the stars of tomorrow.

Don't forget the vast Charles Owen shopping village, selling tack, clothing, equestrian equipment, footwear, gifts and lots more. There's a children's funfair and a plethora of outlets offering tempting food and drink. You could even bring your own picnic, set up a spot near the International Arena and enjoy watching some of the world’s best horses and riders compete.

There are also a number of hospitality options for those who want to make their visit to Hickstead extra special, from the Members’ Restaurant, private boxes, Ringside Lodges and more.

Timetables to be published early 2018.
