Reflections on the Derby

We look back over a superb Hickstead Derby Meeting, sponsored for the first time by

Since their win in the Derby, Trevor Breen and Adventure De Kannan have had a very busy few weeks.

"It's been great - we've had lots of interest from the press and media," said Trevor. "I think we did five photoshoots in the week after our win!"

'Addy', who has become known in the headlines as the 'one-eyed wonder horse', has been lapping up the treats and attention since his win. "He's loving all the attention," said his proud rider.

Trevor had been determined to win Hickstead's most iconic class, having come tantalisingly close in the past three years. But despite winning the £38,500 first prize last month, he's not about to take it easy. "I want to win again - I want Addy to win it as many times as he possibly can. I definitely think he could be one of those horses who could win the Derby several times," he adds.

Trevor and 'Addy' have already won the Bunn Leisure Speed Derby, the Amlin Plus Eventing Grand Prix and now the Derby. Next on the agenda for the pair is the Templant Events Queen Elizabeth II Cup at the Longines Royal International Horse Show, a national championship that used to be open to lady riders only but has been open to male riders since 2008.

But Trevor's remarkable win in the Derby will always have a very special place on his CV. It went right down to the wire, with a jump-off between Trevor and last year's winner Phillip Miller, with Breen taking the win by just 0.02sec, the closest finish in history.

"In our first year as sponsors of the Hickstead Derby it was fantastic that the competition, which always brings out such grit and determination from the riders, went to a jump-off and closely fought nail-biting finish," said Lorraine Meadowcroft, CEO of "The team had a brilliant four days at the Hickstead Derby Meeting and we were thrilled to sponsor an event that is known throughout the world as one of the toughest in the sport."

Hickstead Derby Community member Bronte Patterson was the lucky winner who got to present Trevor with the trophy for winning the Derby. "To have the chance to help present the Boomerang Trophy at the Equestrian.comHickstead Derby was just amazing, I never stopped smiling all day long," she says. "Winning the Hickstead Derby Community VIP competition was a brilliant experience from start to finish."
