Today’s showing classes at the Al Shira’aa Hickstead Derby Meeting saw two of the country’s top cobs battle it out for honours in the International Arena.
Heavyweight winners Oliver Hood and Carters Top Gun ended up regaining the championship after winning the same title in 2023, while last year’s winners Val Sheehan and Red Dove went reserve.
“He’s been a fantastic horse for us – he’s won the Royal International the last two years and he seems to really come alive at Hickstead, and he’s just done it again,” said Oliver. “He’s a really happy chap and enjoys his job – a little bit too much sometimes, but when he gets it right, he’s a fantastic horse.”
Val Sheehan hit the headlines last year, as the show producer lost his leg in a riding accident nine years ago and yet has returned to top level showing. He was delighted to be in the ribbons with the nine-year-old grey mare Red Dove for the second year. “She absolutely loves her job, and in the last year, she’s really come into herself musclewise,” he said. “She’s an absolute darling and one of the lightest cobs I’ve ever sat on. Last year, she was a heavyweight and this year, I’ve moved her into the lightweights and so far, she’s unbeaten.”
Another prolific Hickstead champion took the spoils in the Hack Championship, with local rider Helen Baker winning once again Boston Black Tie: “He’s a much bigger diva than last year!” she joked. “It’s very special to have a win here – it’s my mother’s favourite show.”
Helen now hopes to repeat her victory at next month’s Agria Royal International Horse Show. “What makes him so special is his whole attitude to life. He’s got great looks, great breeding, and a great big trot,” she adds.
